Roland Tyson began making outdoor clothing in 1983, at the age of 17, on an old industrial sewing machine in his childhood bedroom. As an enthusiastic outdoor activities, Roland realized he had a passion and a talent for creating state-of-the-art equipment for outdoor activities. Soon, he designed and manufactured equipment for other Australian adventurers. In 1991, after equipping an unusual first ascension of Mount Everest (a hike of over 1126 kilometers and 8848 meters from sea to a solo peak), SEA to Summit was born.
Roland's search to design the best equipment, the easiest and most durable, would take him to the isolated lands in Australia and eventually in the Himalayas. In these wild places, you could put your inventions to the test.
In 1993, Roland joined Penny Sanderson, who had spent 6 years at Australian Geographic. Her passion for exploration and innovation was perfect for SEA to Summit. She and Roland began to travel a few months a year, spending their time climbing, browsing, hiking and cycling. Wherever they went, testing the products and it was designing.
Sea to Summit quickly became a successful global brand, based on Penny and Roland's love and design. Together, they own and administer SEA to Summit and continue to be involved at every stage of the trip, from the development of raw materials to the placement of the tools perfected in the hands of customers around the world.
